Fed up singing in the shower? Check out some singing lessons!
We can all sing, but taking some lessons will teach you how your voice works and help you start to develop and improve. But what type of singing lessons should you be looking for?

We’ve all had our fair share of moments singing in the shower, and I’m sure a lot of us have bugged those we live with on many an occasion. So why not get out and do something more with that voice? There are heaps of ways of setting your voice free these days and a good place to start is with some singing lessons.

The traditional approach to developing the singing voice has generally been with individual singing lessons. After all, we each have a very different instrument to work with, and no two voices are identical. Unfortunately the demand for individual singing lessons is very high, and it is often very difficult to actually get a place with a good teacher. Of course there are plenty of teachers out there, but you really need a good teacher, particularly where the voice is concerned. Physical damage could be done if the voice is not treated correctly. Adding to the difficulty of finding a good teacher, individual lessons can be expensive. The cost is usually justifiable when you bear in mind that a highly trained teacher will give you their full attention for the duration of the lesson. But for the complete beginner this can be an expensive way to assess if this is where your talents really lie.

Group singing lessons are becoming more available in recent years, and are a fantastic way for beginners to literally start to learn the basics of singing and how the voice as an instrument works. It not just a question of opening your mouth and waiting to hear what comes out! Group lessons will hopefully open you up to the technical side of breathing, overall body and head positioning, how and where to place your voice internally so when you open your mouth the best sound comes out, and other elements to get your voice physically in the best place. After that you should learn how to warm up your voice and support your sound, so you avoid any physical damage to those precious vocal chords.

Beginner lessons will also introduce you to actual sheet music and how to begin to get to grips with reading music and using a score. Clearly this is a whole other area for the beginner musician, and specific lessons in reading and understanding theory will tackle this at a much more in-depth level. But general voice lessons will give you some basic skills to start with. Some homework and a bit of study on your own part will reap dividends when it comes to reading music.

Before you enroll on any course do a bit of research. Check out the school and the teacher for that course. You also need to be realistic about what you are going to achieve from a course. Most professional singers, or even high-level amateurs, have been studying and gaining singing experience for practically their whole life. While it’s not always advisable to push the voice too hard when you are very young, certainly as a young adult voice singing lessons will help your voice settle and grow into good shape. As we get older our vocal chords are only going to take so much! It’s not so different to suddenly working with any other muscle in the body. It will take time to get into shape, but you should really enjoy getting there.

Voice lessons will begin to give you the skills to use and understand your own voice better. Hopefully then you can have the confidence to join a choir or audition for a part with your local musical society, and begin to build up your experience. So no more singing in the shower – get out there and find a course near you!
